The Early Days of Guelph
First Nations Peoples lived in the area now known as Guelph before Europeans came to North America. Speed River was especially important to them because it was by this means that all tribes gathered together to trade and celebrate. The Canada Company established its headquarters in Guelph and John Galt, a Scottish novelist developed the plan of the town in order to attract settlers to the area.

The University of Guelph
The University of Guelph is a medium sized university in the city of Guelph, but it offers courses and degree programs in a wide range of disciplines. In 2008, Maclean’s Magazine gave it the designation of one of the most comprehensive universities in Canada. It is best known for its focus on science and has had a long-standing history in the teaching of agricultural courses.
